Who Decides?

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:48 am by Thomas'Dad

When it comes to making a life and death decision, regarding a child”s medical treatment, who decides? Why is it, that a doctor or court can hold you legally responsible, charge you with child abuse, medical neglect, or child endangerment, yet after taking your child, treating him/her against your will, can cause the death or damage to your child, and yet they suffer no concequence for their actions. Such is the case we suffered in 1999 with our son Thomas, and now in 2009 we see it once again in the case of Daniel Hauser of Minnesota. While the age and type of cancer they suffer from is different, the threat is the same. The minute you as a parent express concern and elect to seek alternatives, or second opinions, you are immediately threatened into compliance. It has already been determined that the use of radiation or chemo has NOT been approved for pediatric application by the FDA, yet it is tauted as the “Standard of Care”, which in plain speak means, will take your kids and throw you in jail, if you don’t comply. All one needs to do is read the pharmaceutical inserts which come with the chemo drugs. Under “Pediatric Use”, most read, has not been proven safe or effective for pediatric application. So it’s like saying, “we don’t know if it’s safe or effective, but we’ll put you in jail if you don’t use it. So where do we go from here? Who decides? The parents, who have everything to lose, our the Doctors who lose nothing?
